Paris is the capital of shopping and creation and sets the trends that will be seen on the world’s streets tomorrow. It is a paradise for fashionistas from all over the world with its numerous fashion designers’ stores (Jean-Paul Gaultier, Sonia Rykiel, Christian Dior, Yves St Laurent, Chanel…) and its young creators’ boutiques. In January, « shopping in Paris » means « bargain prices »: it is the winter sales! For five weeks, from January 6th to February 9th 2010, small boutiques and large stores offer reductions on the season’s collection of 20% to 50% on the original prices. On the last days of the sales, reductions can even be as much as 70%! Foreign visitors from outside the European Union can also take advantage of a 12% tax refund (conditions apply).

For the fourth consecutive year, the Paris Conventions and Visitors Bureau and its partners hold, during the first three days of the Sales (6-9th January), « Soldes By Paris », an operation in which the Maurice Hurand Hotels take part with the itinerant concierge service. In partnership with the International Conciergerie Institute, an itinerant concierge will provide you with little-known addresses, accompany you on smart itineraries, and give you practical informations to make a great moment of your stay in Paris. Throughout several shopping districts of Paris, advisors, gifts, reductions, services and informations will make your shopping break in Paris even more pleasurable.

All our hotels are situated in or near great shopping districts of Paris. The Artus Hotel, Hotel de Buci and Madison Hotel are in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, close to famous shops like Longchamp, Christian Lacroix or Giorgio Armani. The Bourgogne & Montana Hotel is just across the bridge from Place de La Concorde, the Tuileries Gardens and the Champs Elysées. Finally, the Terrass Hotel is in the Abbesses district, full of designers workshop boutiques. Stay in our hotels and enjoy a wonderful shopping break in Paris during the Winter Sales!

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the house of Sonia Rykiel, Les Arts Décoratifs is organising the first major retrospective of her work in Paris. « Sonia Rykiel, Exhibition » takes us on a journey of discovery in which 220 creations from 1968 to the presentday mingle with the fashion photographs and videos which forged the image of this pioneer of contemporary fashion.

The exhibition plunges us into Sonia Rykiel’s mysterious and haunting universe, in which her clothes play hide and seek with catwalk videos and photographs. The exhibition space evokes a Haussmanian apartment, which one gradually discovers as one goes from room to room: a rotunda doors, boudoirs and alcoves succeed one another in a muffled atmosphere emphasized by flesh-coloured gauze revealing the glamorous and sensual touch Sonia Rykiel loves so much. The exhibition covers all the major themes emblematic of the Rykiel universe. It opens with a retrospective of Sonia Rykiel sweaters.

Black, inside-out, the revolutionary stripes but also rarely used materials such as velvet, which she used to make the most elegant sweatsuits, and lace and fur, which tattoo the body with subtle accents straight our of the 1930s…

Sonia Rykiel’s collaboration with Dominique Isserman sealed the creation of a myth and the timelessness of her creations. The exhibition will fully explore the work which united her and the photographer, who took all her publicity photographs from 1979 to 1990.

The exhibition is studded with previously unshown material, including her interview with Andy Warhol for « Warhil’s TV » in 1981.

Until April 19th, 2009 – Musée des Arts Décoratifs

Culture, fashion, style fill the narrow streets down to hidden shops, to create a typical Parisian atmosphere. Chic leads to contemporary, art goes with history, shopping merges into strolling… The Bon Marché, created in 1838 and supposedly the first French department store, seems to gather all these features. At number 24, Rue de Sèvres, the famous store on the left bank, specialized in luxury articles, is house to books, perfumes, men and women fashion, home design and travel stand. On the other side of the street, the food hall called Grande Epicerie offers a gastronomic travel around the world, with Italian, oriental or simply French delicacies!
