Bertrand Lavier was born in France in 1949, and lives in Paris and Burgundy. Influenced by the work of Marcel Duchamp and the New Realists, Lavier has, since the 1970s, questioned the status of the artwork, the ambiguity of objects and the transforming role played by the place where the artwork is exhibited.
Artistic categories are the subject of an approach which raises the question of the painted pedestal, hybridisation, etc. So, he applies thick coats of paint to objects like cars, cupboards and refrigerators, leaving them still usable. The works are then both the object itself and the image of the object. Developing this idea, Lavier superimposes and combines objects, repaints mirrors and paintings, continually questioning the conditions of the (re)presentation. Lavier has fallen under the spell of Manet’s.

Mode asiatique à Paris aux Galeries Lafayette 18 avril 2008

Bienvenue à Asiatic, une ville d’Asie imaginaire du 22ème siècle vue par les Galeries Lafayette Paris.
Le beau, le bon, la tradition et la création se retrouvent dans le magasin sous forme d’une scénographie étudiée, de mini boutiques offrant une multitude de produits, de vitrines culturelles, complétées par des expositions, un show spectaculaire, des animations…venus de toute l’Asie.
Imaginé par trois talentueux artistes - Mark Fisher, Abigail Yeates et Patrick Watkinson - et produit par la société anglaise Big Time TV en association avec The Generating Company, un grand spectacle sera mis en place sous la fameuse coupole des Galeries Lafayette boulevard Haussmann.
Le spectacle Asiatic se composera de cinq tableaux de mode exceptionnels dans un show grandiose à la mesure du continent asiatique : équilibristes, danseurs, experts en arts martiaux et acrobates de The Generating Company évolueront sous la monumentale Coupole Haussmann, au dessus du rez-de-chaussée Beauté, menés par Thanh Dinh et Van Anh du Cirque du Soleil. Une création inspirée par les vibrations mode de la ville Asiatic, son rythme effréné, ses traditions, sa culture et ses innovations.
