Nicknamed « The Painter of Light », Turner is considered as one of the greatest painters of the 19th century. After being shown in London, the exhibition Turner and The Masters, is presented at the Grand Palais from 24th February to 24th May 2010, in association with the Tate Britain and the Prado. It brings together a hundred paintings and graphic works from major British and American collections, the Louvre, the Prado and the Tate Britain. Works from Canaletto, Poussin, Rubens, Rembrandt and Titian are shown side by side with some of JMW Turner’s masterpieces.
This exhibition highlights Turner’s obsession to prove that he was as good, if not better than the old masters he admired. Born into a working-class family, Turner pursued his ambition to become a great artist and entered into competition with artists he considered as worthy rivals. This is the first exhibition ever to explore the full range of Turner’s challenges to the past, and his fierce rivalry with his contemporaries.
