More than two years of work have been necessary to transform the premises of the former municipal funeral services at 104 de la rue d’Aubervilliers in the 19th arrondissement of Paris into the CENTQUATRE, a new major centre for artistic creation today.

This City of Paris establishment with a surface area of 39,000 m² organised into various spaces, workshops, performance rooms and a hanging garden, is primarily a platform for dialogue and exchange between visitors and numerous multidisciplinary arts. Regardless of whether the artists are in residence or not, they will be able to show their work to the public.

The CENTQUATRE (free access) will open on Saturday, 11 October 2008, and from 2.30pm to 2am in the morning, visitors will be able to discover this huge centre devoted to artistic creation, as well as a rich programme of festivities: presentation of works of « 1 % artistique » (« 1% of the cost of public building works given over for the production of works of art »), a giant model designed by Paul Cox, work by artists in residence; screening of 32 films by Anri Sala; reading of 104 slogans by Christian Prigent; live elaboration of musical works by Gérard Pesson, free concert by Tricky (trip-hop music)… Not to be missed!

Upside down at Quai Branly Museum 9 octobre 2008

Conceived by Edmund Carpenter, cinematographer and specialist in Canadian and Siberian Arctic anthropology, this exhibit offers the visitor a novel experience: the discovery, for the first time in Europe, of the totality of Eskimo arts. It invites one to take a voyage around the entire icecap, from Siberia to Alaska, where the civilizations (Evenk, Dorset, Kushkokwin, etc.) are just so many points of reference. Doug Wheeler, an American artist who was a  pioneer in the “Light and Space” movement created the Exhibit’s setting. Jean de Gastines’ signature scenography incorporates the Gallery’s curves, which were designed by Jean Nouvel, as a course that runs through white landscapes, with no orthogonality, from the North Pole.

The curator and artistic director opted to not offer any commentary for visitors during the course of the Upside Down –  Arctic exhibit. A brochure will be supplied, for free. It contains a map that looks like it was created with freehand drawings and which summarizes one’s trajectory inside of the exhibit’s Arctic space. This mini-guide will act as the guide for to carrying out this adventure throughout this ice-covered land…

As one leaves the exhibit, they will see a single sign that will show a list of loaners, as well as credits for those who created the production. Any needed information will be supplied by the catalogue, which can be consulted upon exiting the exhibit, at a point separate from the bookstore, in the Garden Gallery.

Sleepless in Paris? When day turns into night, the lights go down on the city’s sublime sights and the French capital turns into one big dance floor…

After sunset in Paris, stroboscopes and mirror balls replace the bright lights of the big city; DJs spinning multiple sounds take over from tour guides explaining paintings and monuments and serious sightseeing gives way to carefree partying: welcome to Paris nightlife!
Struck by a sudden bout of Saturday night fever? There’s something for clubbers everywhere in the city, whatever your dancing style, musical tastes and budget. Clubbing in Paris is a free-spirited affair: to each his party, rhythm and tribe! Salsa lovers can sway to the sounds of the maracas at La Pachanga (14th), Le Mandunga (19th) or La Peña Saint-Germain (6th). Electronic music enthusiasts converge on the Rex Club (2nd) and the Redlight (15th), while star spotters head for the Etoile (16th), Regine’s (8th) or the VIP Room (8th). Other ever-popular venues are trendy clubs like Les Bains Douches (3rd) and La Casbah (11th). Gay clubbers have plenty of choice venues, including Club 18 (1st), the Mix Club (15th) and the Queen (8th). Not forgetting the trademark Paris soirées at La Loco (18th) and Le Gibus (11th), where the DJs are big-name and the atmosphere stays electric until well into the early hours.
With such a wide and eclectic choice of places to party, Paris is a clubber’s paradise.
